Instant transfers and payee verification: what changed

Since 9 October 2025, banks in the euro area must offer instant transfers and check the recipient's name against the IBAN before you pay. Here is what that means in practice.

Security and payments guide. Updated . About 2 minutes to read.

At a glance

  • Instant euro transfers arrive within seconds, around the clock.
  • Instant payments may not cost more than standard transfers.
  • Verification of Payee compares the name you enter with the account holder.
  • A mismatch warning is a reason to stop and check.

Instant payments as standard

Under the EU Instant Payments Regulation, banks in the euro area that offer normal credit transfers must also offer instant ones, available every day of the year, and may not charge more for them than for a standard transfer. Money usually arrives within ten seconds. Anadi has published an article on the changes on its official blog.

Verification of Payee

Before you send a transfer, your bank now checks whether the name you entered matches the holder of the IBAN. You will see one of three outcomes:

  • Match: the name and IBAN belong together.
  • Close match: the name is similar, and the bank may suggest the correct one.
  • No match: the name does not fit the account.

You can still choose to proceed after a warning, but if you do, you generally take on the risk if the money goes to the wrong person.

Why it matters for fraud

Invoice fraud often works by changing the IBAN on a genuine-looking bill. Payee verification catches many of these cases, but only if you take the warning seriously. If you see a mismatch, contact the recipient using contact details you already have, not ones from the invoice or email.

Instant means final

An instant transfer cannot easily be recalled once sent. Combine speed with caution: check the amount, the name and the purpose, and never send money under time pressure from someone you have not verified. See our security guide for common scams.
