How deposit protection works in Austria
Deposits at licensed Austrian banks are protected by law. Knowing how the protection works helps you decide how much to keep in one place.
At a glance
- Statutory cover of up to €100,000 per customer per bank.
- Covers current accounts, savings and fixed-term deposits.
- Joint accounts: the limit applies per account holder.
- Run by Einlagensicherung AUSTRIA (ESA).
The basic rule
Under the EU deposit guarantee framework, as implemented in Austria, eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. Austrian banks, including Anadi Bank, belong to the statutory scheme operated by Einlagensicherung AUSTRIA. The bank publishes a depositor information sheet on its official website under deposit protection (Einlagensicherung).
What counts towards the limit
All your eligible deposits at the same bank are added together: current account balances, online savings and fixed deposits. If you hold more than €100,000 in total at one bank, only €100,000 is covered by the standard limit. For joint accounts, each holder's share counts towards their own limit.
Temporarily higher cover
For certain life events, such as the sale of a home you live in, or payments linked to marriage, divorce, retirement, redundancy, or insurance or compensation payouts, higher cover may apply for a limited time. The conditions are set by law and require evidence; see the scheme's official information.
If a payout is ever needed
If a bank were unable to repay deposits, the scheme would reimburse covered depositors, normally within seven working days. You would not need to apply in most cases. Keep your contact details up to date with your bank so you can be reached.
